Laundry Room

My laundry room is just big enough for the washer and dryer. I installed some additional shelving over the appliances which works pretty well but it is open and never looks nice. Luckily, I can just close the two folding door that close in this laundry cubby, but sometimes I just want it to look nice for me. So, I think I may have finally made some progress on working to keep it clean and looking nicer. And, everything got cleaned up in the process.

I used some of my smaller canvas bins to store cleaners and a larger one on the top shelf for paper products. My cleaning kit even has a home now (the blue container on the top shelf). All my often used cleaning and laundry supplies are in easy to reach places. Oh, this is so nice!

Closet Redesign

Back at the end of September 2009, I removed the existing shelving in our guest room closet and replace it with shelving to more suit our needs but make it easy to change as our needs may change.

It is amazing how many items come out of a closet. Vertical storage really is an illusion.

In September 2009, I had all of the items back in the closet, but found that for more support for the few clothes in the closet, I needed another upright and bracket in the far right corner. In April 2010, I finally finished my project and here are the pictures of the finished closet redesign.

Hallway Organization

I was finally able to get the Closetmaid 9 Cube Storage Cabinet after a few months of waiting for it to go on sale. It was easy to put together and took maybe 45 minutes total.

In the before picture, I used a shoe storage cabinet with some shelving removed to make room for the cloth baskets. In the after picture, the new cloth cubes hold much more than the old cloth baskets and thus more can fit in a smaller space. What took the entire area in the before picture, only needs the space of the new 9 cube storage area. I am going to leave the 2 corner shelf units in the area for now, but I don’t know if I will even need them. I think they will be finding new homes.

Bead Tackle Box

One of my January goals is to start making and selling necklaces on Etsy. With all new ventures, there is start-up involved. My start-up involved: beads, wire, and a way to organized everything. I purchased new materials and made 3 new necklaces to list and then wondered how many other materials I had but knew that most were in a bin upstairs that took me bringing everything out of the bin to see what I had. I was determined to get my beads and supplies organized.

While celebrating my birthday by going out to dinner with my husband’s dad and step-mom, we got to talking about my crafting hobbies. I mentioned wanting to organize my beads and my husband’s dad suggested using a tackle box. I said that I had looked into them briefly a little while ago and hadn’t found anything that would work. When we got home, I started looking at tackle boxes – they have come a long way. After searching that evening, I narrowed my choices to 3 possibilities. I mentioned to my husband my choices and my logic.

My logic being: When I am looking at two things where one is a cheaper version and the other is better quality version, to wait, do my research, and consider that later I will probably want the better quality one. Money is saved in the long run not buying the cheaper one just to turn around and buy the better quality one later. There is less waste and time is saved too since I won’t be trying to sell the old things. I’ve been trying to follow this logic for a little while now – some things are just not possible, but in most cases the logic works pretty well.

The tackle box I finally chose, ordered, and received has the potential for almost 200 compartments! I know it was a bit much in cost, but every last bead I own fits in this box plus lots of room to grow. I could even use it for lots of other craft stuff should I decide not to continue with beading after a while – even though I have been beading something since sometime before my teens. This afternoon and evening I worked on sorting the beads and filling up the tackle box. Now, I need to list the necklaces on Etsy by the end of the month. Hopefully, they will sell and I can make more and get some real use out of this tackle box!

Scrapbook Center Revised

After a few months, I finally got back to organizing my scrapbook station in the living room. I was able to remove the green canvas bins like I wanted. I found some pink plastic containers and little glass bottles in my container bin in the attic and used them for embellishment organization.

I am very happy with the layout now and can get to everything easily.

Even More Space Bags

Once I proved to myself that the Space Bags did so well organizing the attic, I waited until the following month to get more. And when I did, I went through my jackets, sweaters, and small rugs to fill more space bags.

Lots of sweaters fit in one of these jumbo Space Bags… Just a few shy of 40!

Small rugs did pretty well too. I didn’t have too many but enough to make the space bag worth it. I started with more rugs but donated a lot of them knowing I would just be wasting storage space if I held onto them. I have room to expand if necessary.

Organizing Ribbon

I saw a post by Christy (ColumbiaLily) where she organized all of her ribbon. It inspired me to get mine together. I couldn’t find the zip-top baggies but I did find some self-sealing ones at Joann that worked just fine. I can reuse the bags over and over.

Scrapbook Center

So I can be in the same room as my husband when I scrapbook (while I watch him play video games or while he does his own thing on his computer), I have my scrapbook stuff in the living room. Until it got organized on a shelving unit, it always got in the way. It still wasn’t visually appealing until recently when I used some boxes I was using and re-purposed them. The scrapbook area looks so much better. I still want to get rid of the big canvas bins on top but I need to either get more boxes or something. For now though, this works beautifully.

Tip-out Tray

One of the nicest “drawers” in the kitchen is the tip-out tray. They are those little trays that fit in that small space right in front of the sink.

I searched to see what I could find but wasn’t sure what to call them at first. After being told what they were called and that they would cost $150 by Home Depot, I thought I would never be able to have these neat little trays in my kitchen. I finally found them at Lowes and when I did, I bought enough for all of the sinks in the house. I installed two in the kitchen and plan to install the others in the 2 1/2 bathrooms that we have. I’m not sure what I will put in them in the bathrooms, but the kitchen ones were planned out before purchase. I am very happy with them and they are exactly what I wanted. It took a little bit of time to install but it wasn’t difficult.

They come in two sizes. The trays come in white plastic or stainless steel. Either click the links in this post or search for “tip out” on Lowes or Amazon’s website. You will see many options. I went for the plastic ones since I could get 2 for the price of one and since I was purchasing 4 sets of 2, it was a lot cheaper. Plus, all of the ones I had ever seen were the white plastic type.

More Jumbo Space Bags

This week’s project involves more Space Bags. On Sunday, I purchased more space bags like I hoped to last week. On Monday, I condensed more items in the attic – sheets and towels this time. I am definitely making progress on the attic – I should have taken pictures before I started. It is amazing the amount of stuff that is accumulated when you stay in the same house for almost 8 years.

The condensing of the towels…

This evening, my husband helped me get the 4 Space Bags (stuffed animals, blankets, towels, and sheets) into the attic. They took up about 1/3 of the space the items took up before they were packed into vacuum bags. Yay for more space and organization!
